Unexpected Consequences
When the government stimulate energy efficiency programs, the common perception is that prices will artificially increase.
I thought so too.
With the large interest in the Qld government $3000 grants and interest free loans scheme, the opposite has happened. This week both our major suppliers of LG Chem batteries and Solax Triple Power have heavily reduced their prices.
The battery scheme has caused frenzy with buyers rushing in to get the rebate and Interest free loan. We at UV Power are shocked at how people are rushing into purchasing batteries without proper consideration of the factors.
If you have received a quote from us, expect the price to be lower when it comes time for your site inspection. We quoted your home sight unseen and made the decision to quote based upon some minor electrical work for the battery and we included blackout power supply functions. With the reduction in battery prices in you can expect the system price will be less than we first quoted.
Once you have received your approval from the government let us know and we will have a good look at your electrical board, battery location and house layout, and you can expect lower prices.
Some tips when buying batteries for your home
The first thing we recommend is taking your time to make the decision on the type of battery and its size. Once you have been approved you have 6 months to install, so don’t rush into any decisions.
When purchasing a battery, the major factor to consider is your families and home’s usage patterns.
- How much of your power bill do you consume during the day and how much are you purchasing at night?
- What is your total Kwh consumption?
- Are you planning any future home renovations or maybe planning on purchasing an electric car?
You have been provided with a great opportunity to future proof your home with your ongoing energy needs. If you choose wisely you will have years of energy security and low or no power bills.
Before choosing a size battery its time to consider a few factors.
Is it possible to shift some of your nighttime usage to the day? Doing this will allow your solar PV to power a larger percentage of your household consumption. Simple measures like running timers on your pool pump and hot water systems to operate when the sun shines.
Small changes can increase your financial returns and reduce emissions. Your aim needs to be consuming as much energy when the sun shines.
Do not use all appliances at once but gradually over the day to ensure constant consumption. We recommend having a good analytics system to monitor your consumption in unison with the solar production. The more you consume during the day the less you will need to rely on a battery and the smaller battery you will need.
Quality
In the solar industry there are a lot of substandard panels, inverters and batteries being sold. We recommend spending a little more on higher quality materials that will last long term, saving you long term.
Do you need Black out protection or EPS?
An EPS is an Emergency Power Supply, or also known as Blackout protection. If the grid goes down you will have power to limited circuits The most common circuits are the houses lighting and your fridge circuits. Some systems have the EPS built in; others require an additional EPS box and others don’t have any. If you have blackouts regularly an EPS is a good idea.
Sizing
Do not buy a battery until you calculate what capacity you need. If in doubt please discuss with us your usage patterns with us. We have a background in Energy Auditing and will be able to help you choose the correct size and type of battery.
Some batteries are modular, so the first module includes all the installation costs of cabling a battery management system, and the additional modules are “plug and Play”.
If you see your home may be growing its energy usage, then this is a viable solution. If your not planning on growing your energy use then a wall mounted battery may be more suitable
There are a lot of factors to consider when buying a battery. Be sure to talk to us and arrange a site inspection so you can choose the right product at the right price. We will give you guidance so that the battery you purchase is the correct fit for your family for now and into the future.
