Sungrow Inverter Overview

Sungrow is the world's largest inverter manufacturer by shipment volume and a popular choice for Australian residential solar systems. Their range includes standard string inverters and hybrid inverters compatible with the Sungrow SBR battery system. All Sungrow inverters come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty as standard.

Understanding Your Inverter Display

Sungrow inverters feature an LCD display with navigation buttons. The display shows key system information at a glance.

LED Indicators

  • Green (solid): Normal operation
  • Green (blinking): Communication active
  • Blue (solid): Standby mode (normal at night)
  • Red (solid or blinking): Fault detected

Display Screens

Use the up/down buttons to navigate between screens:

  1. Home: Current power output (kW)
  2. Energy: Daily, monthly, yearly, and total energy production
  3. System Info: Model, serial number, firmware version
  4. Fault History: Recent error codes and timestamps

Display Timeout

The Sungrow display backlight turns off after a period of inactivity to save power. Press any button to wake it up.

Connecting to WiFi

Sungrow inverters use a WiFi dongle (WiNet-S module) for internet connectivity and monitoring.

  1. Download iSolarCloud

Install the Sungrow iSolarCloud app from your phone's app store and create an account.

  2. Enter Configuration Mode

Long-press the button on the WiFi dongle (small module plugged into the bottom of the inverter) until the LED blinks rapidly.

  3. Use the App to Connect

In iSolarCloud, tap "Device Networking". The app will scan for nearby Sungrow devices. Select yours from the list.

  4. Enter WiFi Credentials

Select your home WiFi network and enter the password. The app will push the configuration to the inverter.

  5. Verify Connection

Within 1-2 minutes, the WiFi dongle LED should turn solid green, confirming a successful connection. Your system will appear in the iSolarCloud app.

Slow Connection?

If the WiFi dongle is struggling to maintain a connection, check the signal strength. Sungrow WiFi dongles support 2.4GHz only. A WiFi extender near the inverter can solve range issues.

iSolarCloud Monitoring

The iSolarCloud platform provides comprehensive monitoring:

  • Real-time dashboard: Current power, daily energy, and system status
  • Historical data: Graphs and tables for any date range
  • Battery monitoring: If you have a Sungrow hybrid system with battery, see charge/discharge cycles and state of charge
  • Remote diagnostics: Your installer can access system data remotely to diagnose issues

Sungrow Hybrid Systems

If you have a Sungrow hybrid inverter with an SBR battery, the inverter manages solar generation, battery charging/discharging, and grid interaction automatically. The default mode prioritises:

  1. Powering your home from solar
  2. Charging the battery with excess solar
  3. Exporting surplus to the grid
  4. Discharging the battery when solar is insufficient
  5. Drawing from the grid as a last resort

Battery Modes

Sungrow hybrid inverters support multiple operating modes (self-consumption, forced charge, backup reserve). These can be configured through iSolarCloud, but we recommend leaving the default self-consumption mode unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Maintenance

  • Keep ventilation clear: Maintain at least 30cm clearance around the inverter
  • Check the WiFi dongle: Ensure it's firmly plugged in and the LED shows activity
  • Firmware updates: Applied automatically via WiFi. You may see the inverter restart briefly during updates.

Do Not Open the Inverter

There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Opening the inverter casing voids your warranty and poses a serious electrical safety risk.
